Why should I care? If 66 players have opted out of the 2020 NFL season…

Sixty-six players have opted out of the 2020 NFL season because of concerns over the covid-19 pandemics.

Why do I care? Why should we care?

Professional athletes are among the most admired people in the country. They have a deep contact with the public. They can set examples. They do convey important messages about perseverance and fairness, sacrifice and success. They can set examples.

They are citizens, they have opinions, they are entitled to the freedom of speech.

By acknowledging the possibility that crowds gathering in stadiums will easily spread the virus, they show high levels of civic responsibility. Their action helps sharing the knowledge about the spreading of the virus, and points to the way to limit the spreading by avoiding large gatherings, by practicing social distance and by wearing a mask.

Last but not least, their action underscores the fact that the protection of health is everybody’s business.
