Breathe. Just breathe. Inhale. Exhale. Repeat. Words that have no meaning to those lives lost to guns. Senseless gun deaths. Babies. Future generations of babies. Moms. Dads. Brothers. Sisters. Neighbors. Gone.
In February, the U.S. House of Representatives passed major gun safety legislation for the first time in more than two decades. Yes, you read that right, two decades. Senseless. How many people have lost their lives to gun violence since then? President Obama openly wept about the issue. We all should be weeping. The insanity of mass shooting after mass shooting, only to be followed by inaction is not acceptable.
More guns, weapons of mass destruction and mental health problems equal more deaths. States with stronger gun laws have lower gun death rates, year after year. Alabama and our neighboring states on both sides two states deep (MS, LA, GA and SC) received an F on the Annual Gun Law Scorecard. “Epic Fail” as some lucky teenagers might say. Here’s where I remind myself…take a deep breath. Inhale. Exhale. Here’s where I can’t help but remember the 20 children killed at Sandy Hook that never became teenagers.
Moms protect their children with a fierceness. That’s just what we do. My mom friends and I will be joining volunteers from across our state on Advocacy Day in Montgomery April 10. That day, you’ll see a Blue Democrat proudly wearing my Red Moms Demand Action Shirt. You are welcome to join us. Call and write your Representatives. Keep up the work others have started and continue the work has been put on hold nationally for two decades. Be relentless. Use your voice against gun violence and for common sense gun laws. Let’s continue to breathe deeply, to speak loudly and to always remember those whose breath was taken from them.
